  • IELTS Writing (Письмо).

IELTS Writing Topics:

  • You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
  • The table below shows the percentage change of property value for five cites below.
  • Write a report to college tutor describing the information shown below.
  • You should write at least 150 words.

IELTS Writing —

  1. A = London B = Liverpool C = Southampton D = Newcastle
  2. E = Exeter

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. You have been traveling from London to Oxford by National Express coach. Reaching Oxford you found that your bag had been stolen from the luggage  department of the coach. You contacted the lost property department of National Express, but they did not have any information about your bag.

  • Write a letter to the manager of National Expresses lost property department. In your letter • explain what happened • describe your lost bag
  • • say what you expect him to do.
  • You should write at least 150 words.

IELTS Writing Topics:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Present a written argument or case to an educated reader with no specialist knowledge of the following topic. The population of the world continues to grow, while the word's resources are rapidly being depleted. If human beings are to survive on this planet, it is essential that urgent measures be taken to deal with the imbalance between population and resources. You should write at list 250 words. You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

IELTS Writing

IELTS Writing

  • Тренируйтесь писать тексты каждый день;
  • Делайте это в том числе для того, чтобы работать над почерком: он должен быть если не самым красивым, то, как минимум, понятным и разборчивым;

IELTS Writing —

IELTS Writing —

IELTS Writing:

IELTS Writing: useful tips and resources

IELTS Writing —

IELTS is the high stakes English test for international study, migration and work. It opens a world of opportunity. Are your students (or you) going to take the IELTS exam? Do you need advice on resources and preparation strategies? Here are the articles on how to teach IELTS Speaking,  Listening and Reading. In this article, we have collected useful links and tips for the Writing part of the Academic exam.

Academic IELTS Writing consists of 2 tasks: Writing task 1 requires to describe a graph, diagram or chart. You will be asked to describe, summarise or explain the information in your own words. In Task 2 you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The IELTS Writing test takes 60 minutes.

It is advised to spend 20 minutes on Task 1, and 40 minutes on Task 2. You will be asked to write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2 (there is no maximum limit). The Writing test is marked by a certificated IELTS examiner. Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1 in the IELTS Writing test.

Scores are reported in whole and half band.

Here are the band descriptions and samples:

Key points to remember for all task types in Writing Part 1:

  • Students should spend 20 minutes doing Writing Part 1. When they’re developing skills, they can spend longer. However, it’s better to set time limits even while doing practice tests to see how much they can do within 20 minutes. Then they can spend more time improving their writings.
  • Never skip the planning stage though – it will save time later and will help make sure they have enough to say and don’t miss anything.
  • Try to leave a little time at the end for students to read through their writing and check for any obvious problems.
  • If students are writing by hand, they should use a pencil so that it is easy to make changes.
  • Exam takers should write a clear introduction paraphrasing the question and describing exactly what they will be reporting on. Imagine that the person who is reading the report cannot see the chart or diagram at all. The first thing they need to know is what is being described.
  • No matter what type of data they are given, they must summarise the main points in one or two sentences, called the overview. If they do not include an overview they will get a reduced score for task achievement.
  • As in any exams it is very important to follow the instructions exactly. Students are asked to summarise the information, report the main features and make comparisons. They don’t need to analyse the data, interpret it or explain it. Even if the reason for something seems obvious, e.g. ice cream sales going down in winter, they shouldn’t write ‘this could be because of the cold weather’ in your answer.
  • Make sure they write enough, at least 150 words. There is no maximum limit, however, if students try to write more, they tend to spend on this task more than 20 minutes, lose precious time and not double check their writing.
  • With dynamic graphs, charts and tables if the x-axis shows a number of years, e.g. the period from 1982 to 2010, then the past simple to describe the data should be used. If there isn’t a year mentioned, then it is describing daily, weekly or monthly figures in general –  the present simple should be used. It is also possible to get a forecast of the future, and have to use ‘will’.

Key points to remember for tasks Writing Part 1:

Do:

  • be aware of the different types of essays and be sure about what students are supposed to do.
  • allow only 40 minutes for Task 2. Even for practice tests!
  • start with planning! Set time limits for planning and stick to them. In Task 2 it means analysing the question, coming up with ideas and opinions, selecting the main points you want to make, noting down what evidence or examples you will use to support them, and arranging them into paragraphs.
  • finish by checking the essay to make any important final changes and improvements.
  • practise a lot. The more students feel confident about answering all the different task types, the better they’ll feel going into the test.
  • practise your essay writing skills with these different tasks:
  • A for and against essay about online communication
  • An opinion essay about fast food
  • An opinion essay about crime, prison and community service
  • An opinion essay about the effects of the internet on education
  • Don’t:
  • ignore what the question asks to do. If it asks students to consider both sides of an argument, then they should include pros and cons in their answer.
  • try to be too complex. Exam takers should make sure their language and plan are appropriate.
  • introduce new ideas at the end of any of your writing: the conclusion should bring together what you’ve already written about in the main body
  • put anything extra in your answers – nothing unnecessary. Keep it simple!

IELTS Writing Task 2

IELTS Writing —

IELTS Writing Task 1 –

IELTS Writing Task 2 –

  • Some people think… while others believe… Discuss both points of view and give your opinion.
  • A statement/an opinion. Do you agree or disagree?
  • A problem. Discuss causes and suggest measures.
  • A phenomenon. Discuss problems and suggest solutions.
  • A phenomenon. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages.

IELTS Writing Task 2

Discuss both points of view and give your opinion

In many countries children are engaged in some kind of paid work. Some people regard this as completely wrong, while others consider it as valuable work experience, important for learning and taking responsibility.

Discuss both points of view and give your opinion.

Music is played in every society and culture in the world today.

Some people think that music brings only benefits to individuals and societies. Others, however, think that music can have a negative influence on both.

Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some people say that the best way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities. Others, however, say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Some people prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoiding change. Others, however, think that change is always a good thing.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Do you agree or disagree?

  • Do you agree or disagree?
  • How far do you agree or disagree?
  • To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  • What are your opinions on this?

IELTS Writing Task 2:

Many people are using credit cards or loans to run up huge personal debts that they may be unable to repay. It should therefore be made more difficult for individuals to borrow large amounts of money.

What are your opinions on this?

The exploration and development of safe alternatives to fossil fuels should be the most important global priority today.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The only way to reduce the amount of traffic in cities today is by reducing the need for people to travel from home to work, education or shopping.

How far do you agree or disagree?

Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programs (for example, working for a charity, improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children).

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Every year several languages die out. Some people think that this is not important because life will be easier if there are fewer languages in the world.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Пускай наличие Some people… Agree or disagree.

Causes and measures, problems and solutions

  • In many countries schools have severe problems with student behavior.
  • What do you think are the causes of this?
  • What solutions can you suggest?
  1. More and more people claim that modern work patterns are a source of stress.
  2. What do you think are the causes of this?
  3. Can you suggest some possible solutions?
  • In many major cities around the globe the amount of traffic is increasing.
  • What do you think are the causes of this?
  • Can you suggest some possible solutions?

Many people believe that the high levels of violence shown in films today are causing serious social problems.

What are these problems and how can they be reduced?

In many countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing.

What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?

Health and fitness.

  • causes and problems
  • causes and solutions
  • problems and solutions

  • causes – reasons – why?
  • problems – effects – consequences — results
  • solutions – measures – steps — action

Advantages and disadvantages

  • What are the advantages and the disadvantages of this?
  • Discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of this development.
  • Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Portable entertainment devices, such as MP3 or DVD-players, which allow people to listen to music or watch films on the move, are now commonplace.

What do you think are the main advantages and disadvantages of this development?

It is important for travelers and business people to understand the cultures they come into contact with, however briefly.

What are the main advantages of doing so? What do you think is the main disadvantage of not doing so?

In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.

IELTS Writing Task 2

Читайте то, где написано this is a good example of an essay (и нет балла).

Some people prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoiding change. Others, however, think that change is always a good thing. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Over the last half century the pace of change in the life of human beings has increased beyond our wildest expectations. This has been driven by technological and scientific breakthroughs that are changing the whole way we view the world on an almost daily basis. This means that change is not always a personal option, but an inescapable fact of life, and we need to constantly adapt to keep pace with it.

Those people who believe they have achieved some security by doing the same, familiar things are living in denial.

Even when people believe they are resisting change themselves, they cannot stop the world around them from changing.

Sooner or later they will find that the familiar jobs no longer exist, or that the ‘safe’ patterns of behaviour are no longer appropriate.

However, (Слово связка — контраст) reaching the conclusion that change is inevitable is not the same as assuming that ‘change is always for the better’. Unfortunately, it is not always the case that new things are promoted because they have good impacts for the majority of people. A lot of innovations are made with the aim of making money for a few.

This is because it is the rich and powerful people in our society who are able to impose changes (such as in working conditions or property developments) — ПРИМЕРЫ that are in their own interests. (Объяснение первого мнения про «doing the same things».

В этом параграфе также можно написать ПОЧЕМУ некоторые люди prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoiding change?)

In conclusion, I tend to think that change can be stimulating and energising for individuals when they pursue it themselves, but that all change, including that which is imposed on people, does not necessarily have good outcomes.
